Born in Seoul (Korea), the fifth son of a textile manufacturer in 1932. Fled from the Korean War, first to Hongkong, and later to Japan. Graduated from the University of Tokyo, concluding his studies of the History of Art and the History of Music with a thesis on Arnold Schönberg in 1956. Studied the History of Music at Munich University, studied Composition at Freiburg Conservatory in 1956-58. Lives and works in New York, teaches at Staatliche Kunstakademie, Düsseldorf, and has a second home in Bad Kreuznach.

Born in Cleveland, Ohio in 1926. Studied at the École des Beaux-Arts and Atelier André Lhote in Paris in 1950 after a BFA at School of The Art Institute of Chicago in 1949.
